“Art Explosion Imitates Life”

Most of us have probably heard the expression, “A case of life imitating art.”  Well, last month at GiGi’s Playhouse Rockford, art imitated life.  Our Art Explosion class is led by Wendy Palumino, who is a very creative person.  With World Down Syndrome Day approaching, she was inspired to help our participants create something that embodied their experience at the Playhouse.

Reflecting on GiGi’s as a place that helps them soar and rise to new heights, our Art Explosion participants painted feathers in beautiful shades of blue and yellow to symbolize Down syndrome.  As the project was being created less than a week before “World Down Syndrome Day,” the color scheme seemed even more appropriate!  They had such a great time creating patterns, realizing that there was no “right” or “wrong” way to go about it.  It was just about being creative and having fun.  After the painting was done, more than 800 individual feathers were then assembled into a fantastic set of wings.  Many of our students posed in front of them, making it look as if they were ready to take flight.

While we hope that every program at the Playhouse inspires our participants to dream big and become their “Best of All,” Art Explosion is definitely a program that gets the creativity flowing and challenges our participants to consider things from different perspectives.  If you are interested in attending our next Art Explosion class, which is currently held monthly on a Thursday at 6:30 pm, click this link to register through our online calendar:  https://gigisplayhouse.org/rockford/sfcalendar
