Getting to Know Our Board – Laurel Johnson

Laurel

My name is Laurel Johnson, and I have been a GiGi’s Playhouse Board Member since 2013. I grew up in Moline, Illinois with my parents and younger sister. I attended Illinois State University where I received my degree in Special Education. I am currently teaching special education at my old stomping ground, Moline High School. My most exciting adventure right now is being a new mom! Bryce and I are blessed to be the new parents of our son, Chase!

My journey at the Playhouse began in 2011 when I started volunteering to earn credit for a class. Little did I know it would be the start of something that would change my life forever! After graduating college, I spent a year teaching middle school while still volunteering  and becoming more involved at the Playhouse as Math Coordinator. After a short time, I decided I was not satisfied in the classroom and wanted to do something more! Lucky for me, the Playhouse had an opening for a Program Manager. In May of 2014 I became a member of the GiGi’s family full time. My favorite part of the job was working with the families and spreading awareness throughout our community. I also loved attending Friday Friends every other Friday and getting to hang out with the young adults. Although my time in this position only lasted until November, it is a job that filled me with joy, pride, and compassion every single day. That is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life. I look forward to continuing my role on the board and helping  the Playhouse grow.
