Jo’s Remarkable and Steadfast Impact
Jo Martin: A Legacy of Leadership and Dedication

Jo Martin is a woman of many titles: Mother, Grandmother, Friend, Businesswoman, Teacher, Baby-Holder Extraordinaire, Dog Mom, Bridge Player, World Traveler, Basketball Enthusiast, Board Member, Treasurer, and Volunteer—to name just a few. She wears each of these hats with grace and excellence. I am proud to call her not only my Board Member and Treasurer but, most importantly, my Friend.
To me, Jo is quiet yet powerful in the best way possible. She is observant and reflective, and when she speaks, her words are thoughtful and meaningful. Jo is a survivor and a conqueror. Widowed at a young age, she raised three children while stepping into the corporate world, where she thrived. After the loss of her husband, she courageously and intelligently took over his business, leading it to remarkable success despite the challenges.
Jo is also deeply loyal, selfless, and generous. She maintains lifelong friendships, has close relationships with her three children and their families, cherishes her eight grandchildren (though one may get a bit of extra attention—her 24-year-old grandson Charlie, who has Down syndrome), and contributes tirelessly to her community. So many people love, admire, and are inspired by her, but it is Charlie’s influence that serves as the driving force behind her instrumental role at GiGi’s Playhouse Orange County.
Over the past four years, Jo has been a powerhouse supporter of GiGi’s Playhouse Orange County‘s mission. From securing vital donations for the Believe in Our Build Campaign to rallying donors and participants for our Gala, Golf Tournament, and Acceptance Walk, her impact is immeasurable. Her involvement with the Assistance League Laguna Beach has forged an invaluable partnership. Through her volunteer work soothing babies during IEP parent discussions, Jo strengthened ties that led Assistance League Laguna Beach to generously support our Literacy program, allowing us to launch the 1:1 program and hire a part-time coordinator.
As Treasurer for the past four years, Jo has tackled one of the Playhouse’s most challenging roles with patience, grace, and remarkable efficiency. I often refer to us as the Scooby-Doo team because together, we can solve almost any financial mystery that comes our way! Working closely with Jo has been a privilege, not only professionally but personally. Her kindness and thoughtfulness shine through in every interaction, whether asking about my family during difficult times or simply listening to my (often lengthy) stories with genuine interest.
Jo has been an invaluable volunteer in the GiGi’s Kitchen program for adults, dedicating her time to helping participants learn new cooking skills and build confidence in the kitchen. Her patience, warmth, and willingness to pitch in wherever needed have made a lasting impact on the program and its participants. Jo’s generosity and commitment to GiGi’s Playhouse extend far beyond just one program. She will continue to be an active volunteer, always ready to lend a hand and contribute wherever she’s needed. Her unwavering support ensures that our community remains strong and connected, and we are beyond grateful for her continued involvement.
While Jo is stepping down from the Board, I know her contributions to the Playhouse will continue. She is far too dedicated and talented to stay away. Most importantly, I am grateful to have gained a friend for life. Jo Martin is, quite simply, the best volunteer and one of the finest people I know.
