We are marching: disability pride parade 2015
Last month, we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). On July 12th, GiGi’s Playhouse New York will join forces with Disability Pride NYC and other disability advocacy organizations to march in New York City’s inaugural Disability Pride Parade. The day will be a celebration of people with disabilities and all they have accomplished both prior to the passage of the ADA 25 years ago and all the civil rights activity that lead up to it. We are thrilled for the opportunity to celebrate our differences and show this city the strength of the Down syndrome community and disability community as a whole.
Our group will meet at 10 am in front of the Shack Shake in the southeast corner of Madison Square Park, after which we will cross the park to the starting line. There, entertainers and speakers will pump up the excitement before we step off at noon from Fifth Ave. and 26th St. to join former U.S. Senator Tom Harkin in front of the famed Flatiron Building. From there we will proceed down Broadway to Union Square’s north-end plaza. The parade will culminate with a three-hour extravaganza on the big stage, featuring luminaries and exciting performances from musicians, dancers, comedians and other stars of TV, stage and screen, as well as appearances by prominent elected officials. A three-block festival will continue along the park’s western perimeter.
We are honored to be participating in this historic event, and hope you will join us and show your Down syndrome pride while supporting the larger disability community.

PARADE FORMATION TIME: 10:00 AM
PARADE START TIME: NOON
PARADE ROUTE: Madison Square Park, traveling down Broadway to Union Square Park.
Meet up: We will be meeting in front of Shake Shack in the southeast corner of the park (Entrance at 23rd St. and Madison Ave.) Look for us in our GiGi’s shirts and holding GiGi’s Playhouse signs ”
Bring: A t-shirt showing your Down syndrome pride, homemade signs, noise makers, etc.

We invite you to drop by the Playhouse any day next week to design your own shirt or sign! You bring a shirt and we’ve got a design station set up with stencils, fabric markers, paints, poster paper and everything you need to express your personal pride in being a part of the Down syndrome community of New York City.
