Join us in celebrating and learning more about the incredible individuals who contribute to making GiGi’s Playhouse Nashville such a special place!

Volunteer Spotlight: Spencer Quehl

Spencer is both a dedicated participant and an enthusiastic volunteer at GiGi’s Playhouse Nashville. After completing the GiGi Prep program in December, Spencer transitioned into GiGi U, continuing his journey of growth and development. With a strong commitment to learning and leadership, Spencer has taken on the role of classroom assistant for GiGi Prep, where he serves as a peer leader and positive role model for current participants.

As a classroom assistant, Spencer plays a key role in supporting program leaders by helping prepare for class sessions and assisting in presenting the curriculum. He leads activities with confidence and compassion, fostering a fun, welcoming, and productive learning environment for all. His experience as a past GiGi Prep participant gives him a unique perspective, allowing him to connect with and encourage his peers in meaningful ways.

Having Spencer as part of the GiGi Prep team has been incredibly valuable. Not only has it provided Spencer with leadership opportunities and the chance to give back, but it has also enhanced the experience for participants, who look up to and learn from their peer mentor. Spencer’s involvement is a wonderful example of how GiGi’s Playhouse empowers individuals with Down syndrome to become leaders in their communities, and we are so proud of all Spencer has accomplished.

Participant Spotlight: Olivia Argo

Olivia joined our GiGi Prep program at GiGi’s Playhouse Nashville this past fall and has been lighting up the Playhouse ever since. Her joyful spirit and fun personality have made her a fast favorite among peers and volunteers alike. Whether she’s working hard on her program goals or just enjoying a moment with friends, Olivia brings a spark of energy and positivity to everything she does.

One of Olivia’s favorite things to do is laugh and play with her friends. Her sense of humor is infectious—she has a way of making everyone around her smile with her playful expressions and quick wit. Olivia has formed strong connections with other participants and volunteers, and her friendships are filled with warmth, silliness, and lots of laughter. She thrives in the supportive, engaging environment of GiGi Prep and is always ready for the next activity or adventure.

When she’s not hanging out with friends, you can probably find Olivia jamming out to Taylor Swift. She’s a big fan, and her face lights up whenever a T-Swift song plays during programs. Whether it’s “Shake It Off” or “Love Story,” Olivia knows how to bring the energy and get everyone moving. Her enthusiasm and love for life make her a joyful and cherished part of our GiGi’s Playhouse family.

Tutor Spotlight: Anna Mest

Anna is a dedicated literacy tutor at GiGi’s Playhouse Nashville who donates her time to support a young child with Down syndrome. Since joining us this Spring semester, Anna has brought warmth, patience, and a genuine love of learning to every tutoring session. Her thoughtful approach helps build a strong foundation in early literacy and language skills, empowering her student to grow in both confidence and ability.

Each week, Anna shows up with enthusiasm and a heart for service. She takes the time to get to know her student’s unique strengths and interests, tailoring each lesson to create a fun and engaging learning experience. Whether they’re reading a new story or practicing letter sounds, Anna ensures that learning is joyful and meaningful. Her consistency and encouragement make a lasting impact—not just in her student’s academic growth, but in their self-esteem and communication skills as well.

We are so grateful to have Anna as part of our GiGi’s Playhouse Nashville community. Her commitment to inclusion and her passion for education are a gift to our organization and the families we serve. Volunteers like Anna help us deliver purposeful programs that change lives, and we are proud to celebrate her dedication this semester.

Program Highlight: Adult Education & Career Development

This month, we are excited to spotlight our Adult Education & Career Development Programs, which include GiGi’s Achievers, GiGi Prep, and GiGi U. These programs are intentionally designed to build upon one another, offering a structured and supportive pathway for adults with Down syndrome to grow in independence, confidence, and career readiness. Each program empowers participants to explore their interests, set goals, and develop the tools they need to live purposeful, fulfilling lives.

GiGi’s Achievers is the first step in the sequence and lays the groundwork by focusing on essential life skills such as financial literacy, healthy relationship building, and self-advocacy. Once participants complete Achievers, they are ready for GiGi Prep, where they begin to identify their personal and professional goals and practice the skills needed to take their next steps toward employment. This includes time management, skill-building, and career exploration—all within a fun, encouraging environment.

The nest stage, GiGi U, is a comprehensive program focused directly on professional development. Through practice interviews, a focus on building independence, and internship experiences, participants work toward meaningful employment in their communities. Our Adult Education & Career Development Programs not only prepare adults for the workforce, but also provide a strong sense of community, purpose, and pride in their accomplishments. At every level, our participants continue to prove that with the right support, they are unstoppable.
