Lifeline in a time of COVID

At Home programs support people of all ages with Down syndrome and peers during this difficult time of separation. Through purposeful programs designed to support the individual needs of each participant, our community is thriving! GiGi’s virtual At Home programming has been a lifeline for Jake, age 13, who has been enjoying so many programs. He loved his first week of GiGi’s Kitchen and even hosted his own “Kitchen Show” later that night for his family. He is looking forward to having more fun with Chef Becky from the Secret Oven, throughout the rest of the summer as she teaches the group to cook and to learn kitchen skills. Jake also participates in one-to-one math tutoring with Natalie a student from Marquette University. This summer he has been working on staying focused without getting too silly. He has improved his counting and addition skills and is making patterns and identifying shapes. Jake gets excited about playing interactive math games with his tutor each week. He has also enjoyed the other virtual programs offered by the Milwaukee Playhouse such as Teen Tastic and GiGIFIT Teen. Having programs available in person are the best, but he is doing very well and is gaining independence through the virtual At Home options just as he would during in-person programs!
