It All Adds Up: Math is Awesome!

For some of us (okay, maybe a lot of us!), math is not our favorite subject. There are so many concepts that can be easy or difficult to grasp, and even more that we don’t bother to try! Typical ways of teaching math can be complex and daunting.

Luckily for our individuals with Down syndrome, we have methods to make learning math much easier and lots of fun! Our participants vary greatly in their abilities, so we combine multiple approaches that utilize multi-sensory teaching.

Our Numicon math shapes are an excellent way to provide that number foundation and introduce problem solving. They are fun to use, easy to count, and a great way to physically see the numbers. Students can use the pattern boards to match the pieces with the right amount of spaces. Numicon pieces can even be used to add, subtract, and grasp the concept of odd and even numbers.Next time you’re in the Playhouse,  check them out and see just how fun they make learning math!

We have had students of all ages in our math program and students of all ages EXCEL at math. It is never too late!

The concepts of math can help in so many areas of life, which is why they include number foundation, pattern recognition, addition and subtraction, telling time, counting money, and fractions.

The math program at GiGi’s Playhouse boosts self-esteem and confidence, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, independence, inclusion, and even fine motor development. For more information and to apply for our next tutoring session, visit our website!
