Mr. Brian Makes Reading Fun!

The amazing FREE programs at GiGi’s Playhouse offer foundational learning opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome, their families, and the community. In today’s #gigisblog, we are highlighting a special tutor, Brian, who help us make the one-on-one tutoring program what it is today!

Brian starting volunteering with us about four years ago doing data entry and general office work. After some encouragement from parents at the Playhouse, he decided to start tutoring. He has since become one of our most dedicated tutors. Those of you who know him know that he has such a good heart and is a valuable volunteer of ours.

Brian makes every part of literacy a fun game for his students. He incorporates things like singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” using a putter to golf for new words, and they even shoot a ball through hoops. Each of his activities speak to the student he is working with and it makes reading so much fun. This has resulted in some of our participants reading better than they ever have with any other teacher!

Individuals with Down syndrome are so unique and special and they all learn in their own ways. The trick is to get creative with it and find what they click with, then you will see their potential SOAR! It’s wonderful to see!

We invite YOU to join us at GiGi’s Playhouse where cost is never a barrier to achievement; all our programs are completely free! Check out our calendar for more info and feel free to reach out with any questions at hoffmanestates@gigisplayhouse.org or give us a call at 847-885-7529
