A Playground We Deserve

I grew up in a great neighborhood, filled with kids my age (to go along with my six brothers and sisters). We were lucky to have a vacant lot right next to us which served as a Kinnik Stadium, Wrigley Field, the Summer Olympics, or even the State Fair midway – whatever we could dream up. We loved that lot and our parents did, too. It felt like our personal playground, and it gave us all a sense of community. Anymore, I fear that neighborhoods have changed, and kids lack that sense of community that we enjoyed as kids. I know that my daughter missed out on that growing up.

I share that sentiment because I think GiGi’s, in a way, is that personal playground that creates a sense of community for our families. That was no more apparent to me than the informal “play dates” that we hosted this past week. On two separate occasions, moms with kiddos with Down syndrome came to GiGi’s Playhouse for “Open Play” during regular business hours. Open Play promotes positive beginnings for new families, creates awareness opportunities for peers and friends while allowing families to network and support one another. It’s as meaningful to these moms and it is fun for their kids.

For me, it was a treat to host all these kids and see participants Hazel, Gus, and Nick play with their siblings and friends in a safe and beautiful facility. It reminded me of my days growing up, and it made me smile.

If you are ever in the neighborhood and want to see what I mean, I hope you’ll give me a call. The Playhouse is waiting for you, too.
