During the GiGi’s Professional program, our interns learned all about Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa is an African American holiday celebrated from December 26th – January 1st. There are 7 days of Kwanzaa, each representing one of The Seven Principles of Kwanzaa:
Umoja (Unity)
Kujichagulia (Self-determination)
Ujima (Working together)
Ujamaa (Supporting each other)
Nia (Purpose)
Kuumba (Creativity)
Imani (Faith)
To celebrate Kwanzaa, a candle is lit each day that represents one of The 7 Principles. The holiday is also celebrated through Karamu (feasts), music, dance, poetry, and narratives. The last day is dedicated to reflection and recommitment to The Seven Principles of Kwanzaa.
After talking about Kwanzaa, our interns shared what they learned with each other. Here is some of what they said:
“You light candles to celebrate” – Diego
“It is a week long holiday that celebrates African American culture” – Quincy
“January 1st is the last day of Kwanzaa, which is also New Years Day” – Colleen
“Kwanzaa is celebrated for 1 whole week. People spend time together and be with their friends and family” – Karen
“One of the principles of Kwanzaa is supporting each other.” – Sam
“It is a holiday that celebrates African American culture” – Luis
“Kwanzaa is celebrated December 26-January 1 every year” – Ryan
After learning about Kwanzaa, the interns helped put up Kwanzaa decorations in the playhouse. Make sure to check them out next time you are at GiGi’s Playhouse!
