Celebrating Volunteer, Doug Moses: A Champion of Confidence, Creativity, and Connection
Some volunteers give their time; others give their heart, creativity, and consistency in ways that leave a lasting impact. Doug Moses is one of those people.
Since 2019, Doug has been a dedicated math tutor at GiGi’s Playhouse Atlanta, showing up week after week with enthusiasm and a willingness to go above and beyond. Many semesters, he takes on not just one, but two or even three students at a time—an incredible commitment that speaks volumes about his passion for our mission and the participants he serves.
Doug’s path to GiGi’s started with a desire to connect and give back. After a 30-year career with Children’s Healthcare, where he worked across finance, legal, regulation, clinical research, and projections, he went looking for volunteer opportunities that involved children. When he found GiGi’s, it immediately resonated with him, reminding him of a childhood connection that stayed close to his heart.
Despite his impressive professional background and love of numbers, Doug remembers feeling nervous before his very first tutoring session. He wondered how he would fill an entire hour of one-on-one time and how to make math not just educational, but enjoyable.
As it turns out, making math fun is exactly what Doug does best.
Esther, one of Doug’s math students, lights up during their sessions and her mom, Andi, shared just how meaningful his impact has been: “We sure do love Doug! He is the only person who can get Esther excited about learning math! He comes up with creative games to help engage her while teaching her math skills. He cheers her on and makes her feel successful in every session. We are so thankful for his dedication, patience, and creativity!”
Abby has the same experience. Her mom, Ainsley, says, “We love Doug!!! He’s the best. I’m constantly amazed that Abby enjoys going to GiGi’s on Saturdays to do math. Doug makes working with numbers fun and is continuously looking for new ways to engage with her so she can understand basic number sense. I love that they can spend an hour together laughing while learning something so very essential. We are definitely Doug fans!!!“
Doug’s ability to turn learning into play, while building confidence along the way, is what makes him so special. His sessions are filled with energy, encouragement, and genuine joy. He meets each child where they are and celebrates every success—big or small.
When asked about his favorite part of volunteering, Doug shared, “I really enjoy seeing the interest and effort that children are capable of. The children have such an astounding openness to their personalities.”
It’s clear that Doug brings as much to his students as they bring to him. His tutoring sessions are lively and engaging because he’s fully invested—not just in teaching math, but in building relationships and creating a positive, uplifting experience.
“I am enriched by the children and I’m fortunate to be able to spend time with them,” he says.
Doug Moses exemplifies the very best of GiGi’s Playhouse. His dedication, creativity, and heart have made a lasting difference in the lives of so many participants and families, and we are beyond grateful for his continued service—especially as we celebrate him during Volunteer Appreciation Week.
