Did you know: Your LaBlast Instructor Will Compete in Europe

Yes, Robert Wallop, GiGi’s Annapolis in-person and virtual LaBlast instructor, is set to compete in “Amazing Vienna,” the international pro-am festival in Austria this December, which will be part of the 200th year celebration of Johann Strauss’ birth. He was invited to compete while in Colorado this spring competing in the Legacy Dance Festival. And that’s not all. Can you imagine dancing 30-40 times in a weekend when competing at the bronze level with his partner during these national events?

In addition, Robert volunteers his talent for fundraisers, including GiGi’s Galas, Special Olympics, and Global Down Syndrome Foundation. How did he get there, you ask? Robert started with hip hop lessons and studied general popular dance styles at local studios. As he got older, he took private and group lessons. Many enthusiastic dancers can relate to another way Robert learned. He loved pop music and the artist Michael Jackson, so Robert taught himself by watching online videos.

Almost 10 years ago, in 2016, Robert became certified as a LaBlast dance fitness instructor. In the past four years, he has expanded his training to include ballroom dance, and he is still training with both private and group lessons. In addition to his competitions, lessons, team practices, and teaching for GiGi’s, Robert typically practices another four days a week. Whew!

But aside from or in addition to all the expert training, Robert has the innate ability to interpret the music, interact with the audience and inspire people with his passion, says Robert’s mother Ann. “He is known for his musicality and his ability to feel the essence and the rhythm of the music, whatever the style. Robert can take any song and personalize the choreography, have his personality shine through and bring the audience to tears,” says Ann.

Many people would think Robert’s dancing would fill his days and evenings, but not so. In 2023, he graduated from the culinary training program taught by the End Hunger Foundation and he became SafeServe certified. After graduation, Robert was offered a position with The Lobby, a restaurant located at Chesapeake Church in Huntington, MD.

Everyone can understand why Robert is looking for a little time off this summer to plan for his upcoming competition season, attend Pals camp, and take a vacation with his family. Of course, he’ll still continue training, and helping his parents babysit for his two young nieces.
