Super Siblings

On Wednesday, April 10th, we will celebrate National Sibling Day. Often, brothers and sisters of those with Down syndrome are forgotten and not recognized for being SUPER! However, siblings of individuals with Down syndrome tend to be compassionate, understanding, accepting, and wonderful people who go above and beyond for their sibling, although we know it can be challenging sometimes!

At GiGi’s Westchester, we are fortunate to have many siblings involved as volunteers, advocates, fundraisers, and cheerleaders for their siblings! All of whom spread acceptance and awareness through their communities.

Pierce is Brent’s brother and a sophomore at Fordham Preparatory School. He has attended the Playhouse since Brent was little, and he stepped in at the very last minute last December to be Santa Claus at our holiday party! Pierce is also the vice president of the sophomore student government at his school, and this World Down Syndrome Day, they organized a fundraiser.

We received a check from the school and a letter from Pierce expressing his personal connection to GiGi’s Playhouse Westchester because of his brother, Brent.

In his letter, Pierce wrote: “Brent has been attending GiGi’s Playhouse for about five years. He learned many valuable lessons in the programs, such as OT, PT, musical talents, etc. Here, Brent feels valued and accepted. Brent has made many friends at GiGi’s Playhouse. I have been to several programs and can see how everyone cares about each other. It is a positive and uplifting environment at the Playhouse. GiGi’s Playhouse has a special place in my heart because of the help Brent receives here. Since you help my brother so much, I wanted to bring awareness to your mission.”
