Making It Happen: Spring Tutoring Session Delivers Despite the Odds

This spring, our one-to-one literacy and math tutoring programs looked a little different—but thanks to our incredible tutors, participants, and families, they were just as impactful as ever.

With our new location still under construction, our tutoring team rose to the challenge of finding creative ways to meet with students. Sessions were held at local libraries, virtually, in shared spaces at the JCC, and the small usable portion of our new Playhouse. Despite the obstacles, we successfully delivered a whole spring semester of tutoring, supporting dozens of students in both literacy and math.

The determination, flexibility, and passion of our team made this possible. We couldn’t be prouder of our tutors and students, who showed up each week ready to learn, grow, and give their #BestOfAll.

Celebrating Our Stars: Best of All Highlights

Let’s shine a light on just a few of the incredible accomplishments from this semester:

🧡 Avery (Age 14) continued her tutoring virtually and at the local JCC.

“Avery has been amazing this session. Her maturity is staggering. She comes in upbeat, smiling, and ready to learn (most days!). She’s focused, engaged, and loves using the laminated word cards Beth created. We’re now building sentences together—and her ability to sit and focus has grown so much!”
Way to go, Avery!

📚 Ana demonstrated her growing fluency and comprehension by identifying the main idea of a chapter in Ivy + Bean and the Ghost That Had to Go without even looking at the multiple-choice answers.
Way to go, Ana!

🎶 Maya worked hard on phonics and comprehension and answered some tough questions with confidence. Plus, she was the best dance partner during breaks, especially when Ed Sheeran was playing.
Way to go, Maya!

✍️ Laura had a fantastic semester, especially in writing.
She wrote two perfect “L”s and an entire page of “P”s—each one beautiful. She was so proud that she showed everyone!
She also answered, “How many is this?” independently for the first time and picked up her counting right where she left off after a water break.
Fantastic work, Laura!

📖 Nicole read an entire chapter book this session, completing her homework each week and approaching everything with enthusiasm.
Fantastic job, Nicole!

📝 Frankie tackled advanced comprehension passages and wrote excellent personal narratives. Always a joy to work with—keep it up, Frankie!

🔊 Kana made significant progress with her reading, practicing voice projection and intonation when reading dialogue. She never missed a homework assignment!
Way to go, Kana!

Gianna impressed us with her focus—by the end of the semester, she could concentrate for a full hour!
Great job, Gianna!

🔢 Heba confidently counted to 20 with little to no prompting.
Terrific work, Heba!

📚 Elle worked hard to read, spell, and write words ending in “-ay.”
Fantastic job, Elle!

Volunteer Spotlight: A Tutor’s Best of All

One of the most meaningful reflections from the semester came from Frank, a literacy tutor working with Laura:

“I’ve learned a great deal from Laura this year. When I first started, I wasn’t sure if I was doing it right or making any impact. But Laura taught me to be patient, diligent, and consistent. Her sweet nature and willingness to always try her best gave me the confidence I needed. Although this was my first time tutoring, I feel like Laura showed me the way. She’s the best.”

Thank you, Frank—and thank you to all our volunteers who show up each week with dedication and heart. We can’t wait to welcome you back in the fall!

The Power of Persistence

Despite not having a fully completed facility, this spring was a huge success because of our community’s unwavering belief in our mission. Whether reading in a library, counting at a community center, or spelling words over Zoom, our students made real, measurable progress.

As we look ahead to our new home, we are filled with gratitude and excitement for what’s to come.

Thank you to every tutor, parent, and participant for your commitment, resilience, and heart.

Let’s keep the momentum going! 💪

Registration for the Fall semester is now open for tutors, with family registration opening on July 13th.
