From Nervous to Confident: Anna’s Achiever Success Story

One of the most rewarding parts of the GiGi Prep Achievers program is watching participants grow in confidence as they develop new skills and take on new challenges. This spring semester, our Achievers had the opportunity to do exactly that when they planned and operated their very own café for family members and community guests.

The café was much more than a fun event. It provided participants with valuable hands-on experience in communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and customer service. Throughout the semester, the Achievers worked together to plan the café, choose menu items, and prepare for opening day. Each participant selected a role based on their interests and strengths, and then spent weeks practicing their responsibilities to ensure the café would run smoothly.

For many of the participants, this was their first experience working in a café setting. It was also the first café event held in our new Playhouse space, adding an extra layer of excitement and a few nerves for everyone involved.

One participant who truly exemplified the spirit of the program was Anna.

Anna joined the Achievers program this semester and quickly became an engaged and enthusiastic member of the group. As the café plans came together, Anna was assigned the important role of host alongside fellow participant Sarah. Their job would be to greet guests as they arrived, welcome them to the café, answer questions, and help create a positive experience for everyone who attended.

Anna and Sarah, before the guests arrived

In the café, the excitement was impossible to miss. Participants were making final preparations, reviewing their responsibilities, and getting ready to welcome their first guests. Anna stood at the host station, looking prepared but thoughtful.

I checked in with her and asked if she felt comfortable with her role and understood what she needed to do.

Her response was honest and relatable.

“Yes, but to be honest, I’m a little nervous.”

We talked about why she was feeling nervous. Anna explained that she felt she needed more practice before guests began arriving. Rather than letting those nerves hold her back, she recognized what she needed and was willing to ask for support. Together, we reviewed her responsibilities several more times and practiced different greeting scenarios.

After a few more rehearsals, I asked her if she felt ready.

With a smile, she replied, “Yes, I got this now!”

And she certainly did.

Once the doors opened and guests began arriving, Anna transformed those nervous feelings into confidence and success. Throughout the busy morning, she welcomed guests with warmth and professionalism. She greeted people as they entered, helped direct them, and ensured everyone felt comfortable and appreciated.

What stood out most was how naturally she connected with people. Family members, volunteers, and community guests repeatedly commented on how friendly, courteous, welcoming, and professional she was. Her confidence grew with every interaction, and it was wonderful to see her truly own her role.

For those of us who had witnessed her uncertainty just before opening, watching Anna shine throughout the event was especially meaningful. Her experience serves as a powerful reminder that confidence is not about never feeling nervous; it is about pushing through those nerves, practicing, and believing in yourself.

Of course, Anna was not the only success story from the café.

Every one of our Achievers played an important role in making the event a success. Participants worked together as a team, supported one another, and demonstrated the skills they had been developing throughout the semester. Whether preparing food, serving customers, assisting with operations, or welcoming guests, each individual contributed to creating a positive and memorable experience.

The feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. Guests were impressed not only by the café itself but also by the professionalism, teamwork, and enthusiasm displayed by the Achievers. Many participants immediately began asking when they could do it again.

Fortunately, they won’t have to wait long.

This summer, our Achievers are embarking on a new culinary adventure as they prepare to open a Chinese restaurant. Throughout the semester, participants have been learning about Chinese culture, exploring recipes, and practicing a variety of delicious dishes.

At GiGi’s Playhouse Westchester, we believe that every individual has tremendous potential when given opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed. Anna’s journey from feeling nervous at the host stand to becoming one of the café’s stars is a perfect example of the confidence, independence, and achievement that our programs help foster every day.

Congratulations to Anna and all of our Achievers on an incredible spring semester. We are so proud of everything they accomplished and look forward to seeing them continue to shine. 💛💙
