LMNOP Program: Building Communication, Confidence, and Connections

The early years of a child’s life are filled with important milestones, and at GiGi’s Playhouse Wausau, the LMNOP program helps children with Down syndrome build a strong foundation for future success. LMNOP, which stands for Language Music N’ Our Peeps, and is designed for children from birth to age three/four and their caregivers, the program combines music, language, movement, and social interaction in a fun and engaging environment.

Like all GiGi’s Playhouse programs, LMNOP is provided completely free of charge and is intentionally designed with therapeutic and educational goals in mind. While participants are having fun singing songs, listening to stories, and exploring sensory activities, they are also developing important communication, social, cognitive, and motor skills.

What Happens During LMNOP?

LMNOP uses a multi-sensory approach to learning that recognizes the strengths of young children with Down syndrome. Activities include music, sign language, storytelling, sensory play, movement exercises, and peer interaction. Through these experiences, children are encouraged to communicate, follow routines, build vocabulary, and interact with others in meaningful ways.

Music plays a central role in the program. Songs and repetitive routines help children learn new words, anticipate transitions, and actively participate in group activities. Basic sign language is introduced to support early communication and give children additional tools to express their wants, needs, and feelings before verbal language is fully developed.

Story time is another important component of LMNOP. Books and interactive reading activities help expand vocabulary, encourage listening skills, and foster a love of literacy from an early age. Sensory experiences and hands-on activities further reinforce learning while keeping young participants engaged and motivated.

Goals of the LMNOP Program

The LMNOP program has several key developmental goals that support children during their earliest years of growth.

1. Strengthening Communication Skills

One of the primary goals is to develop communication through language-rich activities, music, and sign language. Children learn new ways to express themselves while building receptive and expressive language skills. Early communication development can increase confidence and reduce frustration, helping children connect more effectively with family members and peers.

2. Preparing for Preschool Success

LMNOP helps children develop the skills needed for future educational settings. Participants practice engaging in circle time, following routines, transitioning between activities, and participating in group experiences. These foundational skills can make the transition to preschool smoother and more successful.

3. Supporting Motor Development

Through seated activities, crawling, movement games, and sensory exploration, children strengthen both fine and gross motor skills. These activities promote physical development while encouraging children to explore their environment and gain independence.

4. Building Social Connections

LMNOP provides opportunities for children to interact with peers and practice social skills in a supportive setting. Learning alongside other families creates a sense of community and belonging for both children and caregivers.

5. Empowering Families

An equally important goal of LMNOP is supporting parents and caregivers. Families can share experiences, ask questions, build friendships, and learn strategies to support their child’s development at home. GiGi’s Playhouse encourages families to maintain high expectations and recognize the tremendous potential of their children.
