Youth Leading Change: Why the Next Generation Champions Disability Advocacy

Across the country, young people are stepping forward to champion inclusion, support individuals with disabilities, and transform the communities around them. At GiGi’s Playhouse, this passion shines brightly through the dedicated members of the Youth Board—a group of young leaders committed to promoting acceptance, building meaningful relationships, and advocating for individuals with Down syndrome. Their stories reflect a powerful truth: when young people connect with a mission that matters, they become unstoppable forces for change.

Among these inspiring leaders is Owen Gavrila, Youth Board President, whose journey illustrates what motivates today’s youth to step up and make a difference.

A Personal Spark: Where Advocacy Begins

For Owen, the path to advocacy started with a simple but meaningful desire: to find a way to genuinely serve his community. As a high‑school sophomore, he was searching for opportunities where he could not only volunteer, but truly make an impact. That search ended when he was introduced to GiGi’s Playhouse.
What he saw changed everything.
Owen was deeply touched by the joy, support, and sense of belonging that radiated through the Playhouse. He saw firsthand how the programs and environment positively impacted individuals with disabilities and their families, describing GiGi’s Playhouse as an organization that “truly makes a difference.” This emotional connection made the mission feel personal—and personal motivation is often the strongest driver of youth involvement.
Recognizing the need for youth voices in advocacy, Owen decided to join the Youth Board. He wanted his ideas to be used to help others, and he saw the board as a platform where he could not only contribute, but also spread awareness and acceptance of Down syndrome. Just as importantly, he wanted to take what he learned back to his peers, helping them understand why inclusion matters and how they can be part of the movement.

The Power of Personal Connections

Owen believes wholeheartedly that personal relationships are what most inspire young people to become advocates. In his view, it’s challenging to remain a bystander once you build a genuine connection with someone with a disability. Awareness turns into empathy, and empathy turns into the desire to stand up, speak out, and make the world kinder and more inclusive.
This philosophy reflects a broader truth: advocacy is rooted in understanding. When young people meet individuals of differing abilities, barriers dissolve, stereotypes fall away, and advocacy becomes a natural response. It is no longer an abstract cause—it is about people they care about.
At GiGi’s Playhouse, these connections happen every day, and they shape the future of youth leadership.

Joy as Motivation

While many aspects of advocacy require commitment and effort, Owen’s motivation is fueled by something beautifully simple: joy. Every time he interacts with an individual with Down syndrome, he feels uplifted and reinvigorated. He describes participants as a constant source of happiness, energy, and positivity. These joyful encounters remind him why the mission is so important and strengthen his commitment to continue serving.
This joy-based drive is a powerful example of what sustains youth advocates. When they see the immediate positive impact of their involvement—smiles, laughter, growth, connection—their dedication deepens. For Owen, it’s these moments that keep him coming back to the Playhouse, ready to give more, learn more, and lead with heart.

Youth in Action: Events That Build Awareness and Community

Advocacy is lived out through action, and the Youth Board has several exciting initiatives on the horizon.
With World Down Syndrome Day approaching on March 21st, Owen and the Youth Board are preparing to assist with two key celebrations at the Playhouse: the Ice Cream Social and the Playhouse Fashion Show. These events provide meaningful opportunities for youth advocates to connect with families and participants while promoting awareness and acceptance in the broader community.
The Youth Board is also dedicating considerable time and creativity to planning a revamped version of the annual Hollywood Night. This year, the event is being reimagined as The Lucky Few, a joyful evening filled with games and activities for participants and their families. The team is excited to bring a fresh vision to this beloved tradition—and more details will be shared soon.

Generation G: Inspiring Youth to Lead the Movement

Aligned with the Youth Board’s work is The Generation G Promise, GiGi’s Playhouse’s call to action encouraging people to Generate Kindness, Create Acceptance, and Give Generously. The Youth Board embodies this philosophy daily. Through their leadership, they model inclusive behavior, promote awareness, and use their voices to normalize acceptance within their peer groups and communities.
Owen and his team demonstrate that young people aren’t just the leaders of tomorrow—they are leaders today. Their passion, empathy, and commitment are shaping a future where individuals with Down syndrome are valued, celebrated, and fully included.

Youth Leading Change

The next generation of advocates is here, and they are leading with compassion, authenticity, and purpose. Through Owen’s experiences and the Youth Board’s ongoing efforts, we see a profound message: When young people feel connected, informed, and empowered, they become advocates who change the world—one interaction, one event, and one act of kindness at a time.
