Jaquai’s Journey: Learning, Growing, and Thriving at GiGi’s Playhouse

Every week, Jaquai lights up when she logs on for her Literacy and Math tutoring sessions at GiGi’s Playhouse. What started as lessons in reading and numbers has transformed into something far bigger: the ability to communicate, express her desires, and navigate the world with confidence.

Her Literacy tutor beams about her determination, noting how Jaquai eagerly tackles challenging books week after week, steadily building her reading skills. But the impact of these lessons extends far beyond the page.

At home, Jaquai has found creative ways to put her skills into action. Using the methods she learned for sounding out words, she now texts her mother full sentences to express what she wants. She’s even mastered searching for items online, copying links, and sending messages like, “I want the Britney Spears DVD as a present.” From Google to Amazon, Jaquai’s independence and self-expression have flourished.

Her confidence and friendly personality have opened doors in the real world as well. Weekly visits to Honeycutt Coffee with a friend turned into a job opportunity when the owner noticed Jaquai’s charm and enthusiasm. What began as a hostess role quickly grew—she learned to take orders, use the cash register, read recipes, and help make smoothies. Every skill she acquired in her lessons was applied in meaningful ways, giving her pride and purpose.

Jaquai’s story is a testament to the impact of GiGi’s Playhouse programs. Every day, she uses the skills she’s learned to live more independently, express herself, and engage fully with the world around her.

You can help make stories like Jaquai’s possible. Your support—through volunteering, donating, or simply spreading the word—can give individuals with Down syndrome the chance to learn, grow, and shine just like Jaquai. Together, we can give more individuals the chance to shine.
