YogaKids Classes Starting Next Week!

YogaKids At Gigi’s Playhouse

A quality movement program is one that is Individualized, Meaningful, Developmentally Appropriate, Academically Enhancing and Lifelong in Goals. Regardless of what the quality or quantity of a child’s movements may be, a child needs to move. So much learning in the affective, cognitive and motor domains occur while a child is in motion.  The 14 elements outlined in YogaKids, integrates exercise and physical learning with intellectual growth, music, the arts and other creative and life-enhancing skills.

The word “yoga” means “union” and is a system of health which combines various poses that facilitate the mind and body working together. While participating in yoga, children are improving their strength, flexibility, balance and concentration. At Gigi’s Playhouse our YogaKids curriculum will excite the learning experiences of various age groups by incorporating motivating games like Yoga Bingo, Yoga Garden, music and crafts with books that come alive as we pose our way through the pages.

Marsha Wenig, founder of YogaKids and creator of the YogaKids curriculum, has based much of her work on Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, developed in 1983 and described in his book, Frames of Mind. Some of the latest research on brain functioning is showing that practicing repeated sequential movements helps children to focus and organize themselves. Imitating large motor movements builds skills that amongst other things, facilitates the imitation of more subtle movements such as those of the face and articulators for speech. The breathing exercises in yoga are also important in that they build the breath support that is essential for speech production.

Children experiencing joy and purpose while participating in an activity where poses can be easily modified to include everyone. What a winning combination!

Classes will currently be offered on Tuesdays through December. Classes begin Tuesday November 20th.

Butterfly classes for ages 6-10 will begin at 4:15.

Tween Classes for ages 11 and up will begin at 5:15.

My stepdaughter who is a 20 year old with down syndrome might be interested in the tween yoga classes starting at 5:15 on Tuesdays. How do we go about signing up and is there a cost involved?
