Summer Math & Literacy Tutors Needed!

We are looking for passionate volunteers who want to make an impact on the life of an individual with Down syndrome or developmental disability. GiGi’s Playhouse Southern Tier invites you to join our team of math and literacy volunteers for the Summer session!

Our Summer session runs from July 1st through August 23rd, running for 8 weeks. Tutors and students meet the same day and time each week, for an hour session. As a tutor, you will have the chance to create a positive learning environment for your student to love math or literacy!

Requirements:

  • Volunteers must be 18 or older
  • Complete onboarding steps:
    • Tour our Playhouse, signing onboarding paperwork
    • Complete a background check (no cost to you!)
    • 1- hour virtual volunteer orientation via Microsoft Teams
    • 2-hours self led training on the GiGi’s Playhouse training website
    • 2-hour in-person training session with local staff and volunteers

We ensure that you are trained and ready before you even start your tutoring your student!

  • Teach using materials that are meaningful and relevant to the student to maximize interest. 
  • Teach with a multi-sensory approach to build confidence and reinforce learning.
  • Teach students to  practice,  transfer  and  generalize  newly learned skills.  
  • Teach students to comprehend and use information gained from reading to apply to their real-world experiences. 
  • Increase self-esteem and confidence 
  • Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills 
  • Greater independence and autonomy 
  • Enhanced fine motor development
