Shelly – A Heart for GiGi’s in Every Role

At GiGi’s Playhouse, we are incredibly lucky to be surrounded by volunteers who go above and beyond—not just with their time, but with their hearts. This month, we’re thrilled to shine our Volunteer Spotlight on Shelly: a devoted mom, advocate, board member, and cherished leader in our community. Shelly is the proud mom of Mia, one of our teen participants. But to call her just Mia’s mom doesn’t even begin to capture the impact she’s had at the Playhouse. Shelly wears many hats here, and she wears them all with a smile and unmatched passion. She is our Board Secretary, Family Coordinator, a dynamic program leader, and a faithful volunteer in many of the programs that Mia and her peers attend.

Shelly’s journey with GiGI’s Playhouse began, like many of our most dedicated volunteers, through personal connection. As a parent of a child with Down syndrome, she understands firsthand the value of belonging, empowerment, and support. But what makes Shelly stand out is how she takes that understanding and channels it into action—for her family and for so many others. As Board Secretary, Shelly plays a vital role in shaping the future of our Playhouse. Her voice is an important one, especially as she represents the perspectives of families who walk the journey of Down syndrome every day. Her leadership ensures that decisions made always reflect the needs of the people we serve.

In her role as Family Coordinator, Shelly welcomes new families with warmth and sincerity. She knows how overwhelming it can feel to step into something new—and she’s the friendly face and encouraging voice that parents and caregivers need. She answers questions, makes connections, and helps ensure that everyone feels seen and supported. Her ability to build community is one of her greatest gifts. If you don’t see Shelly interacting with new families, you’ll likely find her leading our Dance Fitness program—an energetic, inclusive fitness dance class that blends movement, rhythm, and fun. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and her approach emphasizes joy and confidence. Whether it’s helping participants reach their Best of All or simply making sure everyone feels welcome, Shelly brings out the best in every dancer.

And she doesn’t stop there. Shelly is a regular presence in many of our teen programs—especially the ones Mia attends. But even in those spaces, she’s not just “there”. She’s engaged, encouraging, and deeply invested in creating a positive experience for all. She celebrates each milestone and ensures everyone—whether participant, caregiver, or volunteer—feels like they belong. What’s perhaps most remarkable about Shelly is her ability to balance so much while still remaining present, kind, and full of energy. We are endlessly grateful to Shelly for her leadership, her love, and her relentless dedication. She reminds us that families are not just part of the Playhouse community—they are the heart of it.

Thank you, Shelly, for everything you do! You’re a guiding light, a strong advocate, and an irreplaceable part of the GiGi’s Playhouse family.
