Breaking Barriers: Isabella’s Journey with GiGiFit Kids!

This summer, we welcomed a very special new participant to our GiGiFit kids program: a young girl named Isabella.

Isabella arrived late in the season, during a time when most of our regular participants were already familiar with the routines, activities, and high energy that GiGiFit is known for. But for Isabella, everything was brand new—not just the exercises and games, but the environment, the people, and most of all, the language.

Isabella is a native Spanish speaker and speaks very little English. From the moment she joined, it was clear that she was facing more than the usual “first day jitters.” Our classes can be loud, fast-paced, and full of excitement—a sensory-rich experience that some children jump into eagerly, but that can be intimidating for others, especially when communication is a challenge.

In those first few sessions, Isabella was extremely quiet. She tended to hang back, watching carefully but rarely participating. Her body language spoke volumes: arms crossed, eyes lowered, hesitant to move too far from the edges of the room. We always welcome new participants with open arms, but it was clear Isabella needed more than just a warm smile to feel comfortable.

That’s when one of our incredible volunteers stepped in. This volunteer happens to speak conversational Spanish and was able to offer Isabella the connection and support she needed. With this small but crucial bridge in place, Isabella began to understand that GiGi’s was a safe and welcoming space—one where she could try, learn, and grow at her own pace.

Week by week, Isabella began to come out of her shell.

At first, the changes were subtle: she started following along during warm-ups, making eye contact with volunteers, and smiling in response to encouragement. Then, she began actively participating in games, running with the group, and laughing out loud as she moved through the activities. Now, Isabella engages fully with her peers and looks to her coaches for direction, confidence, and those small but powerful affirmations like, “Good job!” or “¡Muy bien!”

Each time she hears that encouragement, her smile gets a little brighter.

What makes Isabella’s journey so meaningful is that it reflects the heart of GiGi’s mission: creating a space where every individual—regardless of language, ability, or background—feels included, supported, and empowered to grow. Isabella didn’t just need a fitness class; she needed connection, understanding, and the time to build confidence in her own way. And with that support, she has flourished.

We are incredibly proud of Isabella and how far she has come in such a short time. She reminds us that success doesn’t always come in big, dramatic leaps. Sometimes, it comes in small, steady steps—each one building on the last, fueled by patience, encouragement, and a sense of belonging.

Her story is also a reminder of the power of volunteers. Because one person spoke just enough Spanish to reach across a language barrier, Isabella found her way into the GiGi’s community. That moment of connection changed everything.

As the fall season continues, we can’t wait to see Isabella grow even more. Her courage, resilience, and joy are infectious—and we’re honored to be part of her journey.

Thank you to all of our families and volunteers who make stories like Isabella’s possible. Your continued support allows us to create inclusive spaces where all children can shine.
