TUTORING FOR INDEPENDENCE

“When did you learn about money?

How about time…when did you understand time?

With me, understanding money to buy what I wanted or save for something special just happened.  One day I accepted that Mom bought things for me but then I began to want things of my own choosing…I wanted to buy it myself.

Time was the same.  Looking at the clock at school to see how much longer I had to be there or watching the clock to see when the cookies would come out of the oven…learning about time just happened.

I forgot who taught me how to buy something or who taught me how to read the clock but now it’s hard to imagine my world without it.   Did you catch the key word in this last sentence…TAUGHT.

Our volunteer tutors teach this every day at GiGi’s Playhouse.  One child or young adult at a time, in ways they learned from our Math Tutoring program.  We teach them and then they have the experience of seeing someone’s face when they “get it”.

Tutoring MATH is tutoring INDEPENDENCE.  A new opportunity to plan the day and to be ready.  It means choosing something, counting your money to know if you have enough to buy it…and then to buy it!

Thank you to the those that teach our kids this independence.  Thank you for giving 1 or 2 hours per week of your time so that they can learn about telling time.  It is your one-on-one fun and practice that helps them “get it”. 

Independence is taught…it’s deliberate.  It doesn’t just happen with our kids.

It probably didn’t just happen with us…we just forgot.

Something tells me Kaitlyn won’t forget.
