Speech Spotlight: Matthew

Matthew, age 4, has completed 2.5 10-week sessions of the Amina Grace Speech and Language Program.  Matthew’s mother enrolled him in the program because, “Matthew is nonverbal and this program is close to home and free.”  Matthew is working hard to increase his communication skills.  He has been working on sign language as well as using an iPad to help him use communication for a variety of functions.  Matthew is working on following directions and imitating speech sounds.  His favorite activities are music and playing ball during speech sessions.  Matthew’s mom reports that he is finally communicating more with their family.  She has seen a lot of progress after enrolling Matthew in the Amina Grace Speech and Language Program.  “I am so happy with all of his progress!”

“My experience with the Amina Grace Speech and Language program has been fantastic. Matthew’s progress has been great. He is learning more and focusing every day that we come here. Mrs. Thomson also help us prepare for his IEP meeting and with the iPad that he got free from Inspire Dream Foundation. They requested a letter from the speech therapist explaining his needs and she did all that for him. Thanks to this program Matthew is communicating more. Here is a short story I would like to share. My mom took care of Matthew one day. I have a niece who is learning sign language because she wants to communicate with him. So that day my niece was there too. Matthew started signing for eat and drink and my mom did not understand. My niece came and asked him what he needed and he began to sign for her and she explained to my mom what he was asking for. Every day that we come to GiGi’s he gets so happy. Mrs. Thomson is also helping to stay in touch with the school so they can help him more and be on the same page so his progress gets better and finally one day he will talk and be independent. Thank you Amina Grace Speech and Language program.” -Mayra, Matthew’s mother.
