Participants Get Ready for The Fall Session of Tutoring and Speech

Parents and participants attended a meet and greet last Thursday night to meet their tutors and speech therapist for our Fall Session of tutoring and speech.  Our Fall Session runs from September 10th through November 18th.  Participants have the option to enroll in Literacy Tutoring Program, Math Tutoring Program, and Amina Grace Speech and Language Program.

Fundamentals of GiGi’s Literacy and Math Tutoring Program:

  • We teach using materials that are meaningful and relevant to the student.
  • We teach using a multi-sensory (visual, kinesthetic, auditory) and multi-modality (variety of methods) approach.
  • We teach students to practice, transfer and generalize newly learned skills.
  • We teach students to apply and use information gained from math problem solving.

The GiGi’s Literacy Tutoring Program builds a strong foundation from the beginning and is based on the Five Components of Reading which include:

  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Phonics
  • Vocabulary
  • Comprehension
  • Fluency/Articulation

  • Multiplication and Division

Goals

  • Increase clarity of speech and enunciation through a hierarchal approach of repeated exposure and practice of target sounds, focusing on accurate placement of oral articulators.
  • Improve word order and message meaning through focused exercises targeting various parts of speech, including: verb tense, word choice, sentence completion and more.
  • Increase comprehension through the use of various visual models and tasks targeting functional level-appropriate targets.

Benefits

  • Increase self-confidence through positive reinforcement and various forms of appropriate supportive methods, including: verbal, visual and tactile.
  • Improve school and social readiness through activities and goal geared towards preparing participants for skills required within their age-leveled school grade, thereby, increasing their chances of improving social skills of blending with classmates.
  • Increase independence and overall quality of life through confidence-building activities, self-help skills and a positive-reinforcing approach to therapeutic targets.
