Southern Made: Bitty & Beau’s Coffee Shop

In Wilmington, North Carolina, Amy Wright is making changes and fighting the statistics. Amy and her husband have four children, two with Down syndrome. When Amy learned that 70-85% of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are unemployed, she became an advocate for her children and others. Amy and her husband opened up a coffee shop called, Bitty & Beau’s, in honor of her two children living with Down syndrome. You might be asking yourself, “What is so great about this coffee shop?” Well, Bitty & Beau’s employs applicants who are also living with a disability. Customers have said that there is no other coffee shop as warmhearted and welcoming as Bitty and Beau’s. Amy saw a problem and she made a positive effort to tackle it head on.
