October 4th- Lindsay and Charlie
“Charlie’s diagnosis changed the course of my life for the better. As cliche as that sounds, it’s true. I never really knew what I was meant to do or who I was as a person. Fighting for Charlie’s rights through advocacy and writing books has made me a better person, mother, wife, friend, etc. In the past two years I have worked nonstop to get more representation of individuals with Down syndrome in the literary world. If you look around, there just aren’t that many books featuring kids like ours and that makes me sad. I started by writing a book for Charlie for her 3rd birthday, Charlie’s Way. It was so well received that I went full speed ahead, co-authoring America:Beautifully Unique (which features a kid with Down syndrome from every state in the US along with fun facts and rhymes about that state) and Sincerely, With Love. Sincerely, With Love comes out this month in honor of DS Awareness Month and it includes real photos of siblings along with quotes directly from them about what makes their relationship so special. Our goal is that through these books agencies and publishers (and others) start to realize that representation of the Down syndrome community is hugely wanted and and very much needed.
Charlie may only be four years old but in those four short years, she’s taught me more more than I have ever learned on my own. Because of her, others will get the chance to see themselves in publications and be heard. Without her, our family would still be incomplete. <3”
