Ian’s “Best of All”

Best of All: best of all (noun) \best of all\

is progressive, continual, measurable, and it never ends. It is a daily challenge to do a little better than you did the day before, and it’s always celebrated. Possible manifestations: standing just one second longer, reading just one more word, learning just one new number, taking just one more step. It is never a competition; never completed.

This “Best of All” story was submitted by Sue Rokosz, a retired Ford engineer who has volunteered as a math tutor since 2021. Sue says 9-year-old Ian began his math journey at GiGi’s Playhouse Detroit by learning the numbers from zero to ten.

Then came the “terrible teens”.  The numbers from eleven to fifteen were difficult for Ian.  We can understand why – if English was a logical language, instead of “eleven” we would say “one-teen”. Instead of twelve, we would say “two-teen”, etc. Albeit confusing, Ian was determined and worked very hard to master the teens.

And now there is no stopping Ian! Not only has he counted to twenty, but he blazed past twenty to fifty, and is well on his way to one hundred… and beyond!

Way to go, Ian! You rockstar, you!
