Program Spotlight: Destination Discovery

Play = Fun + Learning!

This spring we launched a new program for all ages called Destination Discovery. We’re going to take a moment to tell you how phenomenal it is!

Like all our programs at GiGi’s Playhouse Detroit, Destination Discovery supports the development of fine motor skills, gross motor skills, social skills, and language through purposeful play and peer-to-peer interaction in a casual and fun setting. This program also brings families together to share experiences and build relationships.

However, Destination Discovery is super cool in unique ways, too! Our leaders, Amanda and Jackie, put tremendous time and thought into planning each group to make them fun and exciting. They have a knack for keeping participants of all ages and abilities engaged, and they adjust activities as needed to keep them fun and challenging.

At the beginning of each group, the leaders and participants gather together to discuss the day’s theme and what activities are planned for the hour. For example, one Sunday the theme was Snow & Ice, so they started with everyone sharing what they like to do outside in the winter time.

Then, each group involves 4 stations based on the theme. There is 1 sensory, 1 fine motor, and 2 gross motor stations. Destination Discovery is set up so everyone gets a turn at each station to learn and explore a wide variety of activities.

Destination Discovery meets every 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month, from 10 – 11AM.

Below is a sneak peek of the 4 stations planned for this Sunday, February 23rd, with the theme of Valentine’s Day. There’s still time to sign up! All are welcome, but we’ll need to know how many folks to expect, so if you can join us this Sunday, register HERE.

Goals of each program include:

  • Increase social skills, with focus on group participation and increasing leisure activity options.
  • Increase language development, with focus on vocabulary development, receptive language skills such as following directions and answering basic questions and promoting successful interaction with peers.
  • Increase gross motor skills at each individual’s level through games and activities aimed at active play.
  • Increase fine motor skills, with focus on self-help skills and independent work.

Thank you Jackie and Amanda for all your enthusiasm and hard work! We can’t wait to play this Sunday!
