Letters, Learning, and Big Leaps Forward

Celebrating Kate’s “Best of All” Moment in Literacy Tutoring

Every week, our math and literacy tutoring program brings together individuals with Down syndrome and dedicated volunteer tutors for one-on-one learning, connection, and growth. These sessions are filled with perseverance, progress, and countless moments worth celebrating—but today, we’re especially excited to highlight one of our shining learners: Kate.

Kate’s Growing Confidence in Reading

Kate has been working incredibly hard during her literacy tutoring sessions, and her progress has been inspiring. Recently, she reached a “Best of All” moment that had everyone cheering: she independently spelled the words in the Boggle game—and then proudly read them aloud.

This was more than just a skill practiced. It was a moment of confidence, independence, and joy.

Every session, Kate continues to strengthen her reading skills. She now reads short stories independently and shows real perseverance when she encounters a word she doesn’t know. Instead of giving up, she tries again, applies her strategies, and keeps moving forward.

A Tutor’s Perspective

Kate’s tutor, Caley, has loved watching her grow. She shared:

“My favorite part of this program with Kate was the excitement from accomplishing her work packet and reading independently. Kate had three tasks for the session and accomplished each one. She brought books from school with her and read three.”

Caley is incredibly proud of Kate’s dedication—especially her willingness to stick with a task even when it becomes challenging. Their weekly time together has become a highlight, filled with learning, laughter, and breakthroughs.

About Our Math & Literacy Tutoring Program

Our tutoring program pairs individuals with Down syndrome with caring volunteer tutors. Together, they meet once a week to work on personalized math or literacy goals in a supportive, encouraging environment. GiGi’s Playhouse provides a robust curriculum designed to meet the needs of the learner with Down syndrome.

These sessions aren’t just about academics—they’re about confidence, connection, and empowering each learner to reach their personal best.

Join Us as a Volunteer Tutor

Stories like Kate’s are possible because of our amazing volunteers. And as we look ahead, our next tutoring session begins in May—and you can sign up to be a tutor today!

You don’t need to be a teacher or have prior experience. You simply need patience, commitment, and a willingness to support a learner’s growth. We’ll provide the training, materials, and guidance—you bring the heart.

If you’re ready to make a meaningful difference (and experience moments just like Kate’s), we’d love to have you join us.

Volunteer with us this May and help create more “Best of All” moments!
