From Effort to Excellence: Kendyl’s Incredible Communication Best of All

At GiGi’s Playhouse Detroit, every success story is worth celebrating-but every once in a while, a “Best of All” moment shines so brightly that it captures exactly why all the hard work matters. We are so excited to spotlight Kendyl and her big achievement this spring session in our Speech & Language program.
Kendyl, a bright, sweet, and hardworking teen participant, joined our program back in January with a clear goal: strengthen her ability to communicate with others. LIke many individuals with Down syndrome, Kendyl faces an extra layer of challenge when it comes to expressive language. While her ideas and understanding are present and meaningful, translating those thoughts internally into clear, spoken language, can require additional processing time, coordination, and effort.
And yet, Kendyl showed us what persistence, practice, and support can achieve.
The journey: When Kendyl began the program, she worked on retelling stories—an important skill that requires organizing thoughts, recalling key details, and sharing them in the correct order. The first few times she tried this, there were some struggles. She didn’t give up! Week after week, she showed up—ready to try, ready to grow.
Over the course of approximately 10 weeks, attending sessions once per week, Kendyl practiced breaking stories down into main points, identifying beginning, middle, and end, and putting events into a logical sequence. With support from her clinician, Niki, she built her confidence step by step.
The Breakthrough
By the end of the season, Kendyl achieved something truly remarkable: 92% accuracy in retelling stories clearly, in order, and with all the main points included. This wasn’t just an improvement in accuracy on a data sheet. It was a transformation in communication. Congratulations Kendyl! We are so excited to watch you learn and grow!
