A Parent’s Guide to Summer Success for Children with Down Syndrome

Summer is a joyful time filled with sunshine, family activities, and new experiences. For children with Down syndrome, however, the transition away from the structure of the school year can bring both excitement and uncertainty.

At GiGi’s Playhouse Detroit, we know that individuals with Down syndrome learn best with a balance of routine, encouragement, and meaningful social connection. With a bit of planning, summer can become a season of growth, confidence, and fun.

Here are 7 ways to support your child this summer

1. Prioritize Heat Safety and Hydration

Summer fun often means time outside—but it’s especially important to be mindful of heat.

Many individuals with Down syndrome may have reduced ability to regulate body temperature due to less efficient sweating, which puts them at higher risk for overheating.

To stay safe:

  • Offer frequent water breaks throughout the day
  • Plan outdoor activities for cooler times (morning or evening)
  • Dress your child in lightweight, breathable clothing
  • Take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas
  • Watch for signs of overheating (flushed skin, fatigue, irritability, dizziness)
  • Use cooling supports like water misters, cooling towels, or splash play

Being proactive helps ensure your child can safely enjoy all the fun summer has to offer.

2. Build Social Opportunities and Friendships

Summer is a perfect time to nurture social connections in a relaxed setting.

Children with Down syndrome often thrive in inclusive environments where they can practice communication and build friendships. Consider:

  • Attending GiGi’s Playhouse group programs and special events
  • Setting up playdates with peers
  • Visiting local parks, libraries, or community spaces

These interactions help build confidence, strengthen social skills, and foster a sense of belonging.

3. Create a Flexible but Predictable Routine

While summer naturally brings a more relaxed schedule, maintaining some structure can help your child feel secure and confident.

  • Use a visual calendar or picture schedule
  • Outline a “typical day” (wake-up, meals, activities, and bedtime)
  • Include exciting activities like pool days, camps, or GiGi’s programs

Review the schedule daily so your child knows what to expect. Predictability helps reduce anxiety and supports independence.

4. Practice Flexibility with Backup Plans

Even the best plans can change—especially in summer! Teaching your child how to handle changes can reduce frustration.

  • Introduce “Plan A / Plan B” thinking
  • Talk through changes in advance when possible
  • Keep backup activities ready (crafts, movies, indoor games)

For example: If rain cancels a park day, the backup plan could be a fun indoor activity like a movie afternoon or baking together.

5. Set Clear Expectations for Screen Time

With more free time at home, screen use can quickly increase. Setting clear, consistent expectations helps create balance.

Try a Summer Routine or Responsibility Chart

  • Morning routines (getting dressed, hygiene)
  • Daily chores
  • Reading or learning activities
  • Outdoor or active play

Once these are completed, screen time can be earned. This approach keeps your child engaged with a schedule and promotes problem solving and creative thinking skills.

6. Create a Meaningful Summer Tradition

Creating simple, repeatable traditions helps mark the start of summer and builds lasting memories.

Some ideas:

  • Celebrate the last day of school with a special family dinner or ice cream outing
  • Take an annual trip to a favorite park, zoo, or local spot
  • Host a family picnic or backyard game night

Traditions give your child something to look forward to and create a sense of joyful routine year after year.

7. Stay Connected Through GiGi’s Programs

One of the best ways to maintain structure and engagement over the summer is by staying involved in consistent programming.

GiGi’s Playhouse Detroit offers a variety of purposeful programs designed to support individuals with Down syndrome at every stage, including:

  • Literacy and math programs that build academic skills
  • Communication and social groups that encourage language and friendships
  • Fitness programs to support physical health and confidence

These programs provide routine, social connection, and a familiar environment—helping ease the transition from the school year while keeping learning going in a fun, supportive way.

Registration for in-person summer programs is closed, but we hope you can join us for Open Play each month, or check out the many online options through our Virtual Playhouse. view and register through our calendar here
