Learning for Life: Angie’s Best of All Moment

Celebrating Angie’s Literacy Journey

For the past two years, Angie has been working diligently with her tutor, Maureen, in our literacy tutoring program—and the progress she’s made is truly inspiring! Angie, an adult with Down syndrome, has shown that learning never stops, and her Best of All is a powerful reminder of the importance of lifelong education.

“Angie has been making great progress in literacy. She has begun blending words, having success with a more difficult form of sight word bingo, and is now able to read “I see Al”. She’s even starting to sound out words as she reads!” -Maureen

Way to go Angie! We are so proud of your hard work and progress! Her mother is thrilled with her daughter’s strides, attributing much of the success to the trust and connection between Angie and Maureen. This relationship goes beyond tutoring sessions—they also spend time together in our Fantastic Friends group program, where Angie and other adults enjoy social activities in a supportive environment. This combination of structured learning and social engagement has created a space where Angie feels confident and motivated.

Why Adult Literacy Matters

Angie’s journey highlights something essential: literacy learning for individuals with Down syndrome doesn’t end in childhood. Continuing education into adulthood opens doors to independence, self-expression, and community participation. Every new word Angie learns is a step toward greater confidence and empowerment.

Programs like our Math and Literacy Tutoring prove that with patience, personalized support, and meaningful relationships, adults with Down syndrome can achieve incredible things! Angie’s Best of All is a testament to what’s possible when we believe in lifelong learning.

Join Us in Making a Difference

Our Spring Session starts in January, and we’re looking for passionate volunteers to help more adults like Angie reach their goals. We provide all the training and support to make this experience a success for both tutors and students! If you’re interested in becoming a tutor or learning more, please reach out to our Volunteer Coordinator, Erin Whaley, at ewhaley@gigisplayhouse.org. Your time and dedication can change lives!
