Eli’s Best of All Moment in Music Makers Program

At GiGi’s Playhouse Detroit, we’re always looking for new and meaningful ways to help our participants thrive—and one powerful tool we love to use is music. Whether it’s clapping along to a beat, singing favorite songs, or exploring rhythm with instruments, music plays a unique and important role in supporting learning and development for individuals with Down syndrome.

Every participant connects with music in their own way. For Eli, loud sounds and busy environments were a challenge at first. He loved being part of programs, but the volume of group using all the different instruments sometimes overwhelmed him.

Then came the drum!

With some gentle encouragement, Eli discovered that holding a drum gave him control over the sounds he was hearing. He could participate on his own terms—tapping out a steady beat, feeling the music through movement. Now, the drum is his go-to. It gives him confidence, comfort, and a way to be part of the group while staying true to his needs. Way to go Eli on your Best of All Moment in Music Makers!

Eli’s story reminds us that music is flexible—it meets learners where they are, and gives them an opportunity to shine!

Movement + Music = Motor Skills

From dancing to tapping a drum, moving along with music is not only fun—it’s functional. Many individuals with Down syndrome benefit from activities that develop gross and fine motor skills. Music and movement help strengthen coordination, balance, and body awareness, all while boosting confidence.
