The Royal Oak Community Starts Celebrating World Down Syndrome Day Early!

If you or a loved one have participated in Kids Club, Art Explosion, Fantastic Friends, or attended one of our fundraisers, you’ve probably met our amazing volunteer Tamara. She is a co-leader for all of those programs and helps out with many others when possible. She and her family have helped out with our fundraisers, and she has decided to create one of her own!

Wearing bright, mismatched, bold-patterned socks for World Down Syndrome Day is not a new concept to Tamara and her family as they fondly remember her brother, Winston, who had Down syndrome and had passed away in 2022; you can read more about their amazing bond in our blog here. Tamara wanted to take the notion of proudly wearing these socks and turn it into a fundraiser in which neighboring schools could participate. Through the end of February, donation boxes are placed in Keller Elementary School, Royal Oak Middle School, and City Hall for new socks to be collected. Tamara’s friends and neighbors will pair the socks with a different sock. Then, for World Down Syndrome Day, the socks will be sold, and all proceeds will go to our playhouse! The socks will be sold at Keller Elementary and Royal Oak Middle School for $6 a pair during the school day. Sales start on March18th and end on March 21st- World Down Syndrome Day. People are encouraged to wear their new mismatched socks on 3/21 to celebrate and spread acceptance.

Thank you, Tamara, for organizing this and for all you do for our playhouse! Thank you Royal Oak community for your continued support. We are proud to be surrounded by such great neighbors! If you would like more information, reach out to us at detroit@gigisplayhouse.org
