April Program & Volunteer Spotlight

Did you know that April is volunteer appreciation month? GiGi’s Playhouse Detroit is so THANKFUL for all our volunteers. Maybe you have volunteered for our 1:1 Literacy Tutoring program, at a signature group program or behind the scenes with admin work, whatever it is – we couldn’t do it without you!!

In 2019 our volunteers dedicated 2,448 hours to our playhouse! Thank you to all our volunteers for continuing to help us change the way the world views Down syndrome and send a global message of acceptance for ALL! We love all our amazing volunteers!

While this month is extra special, we are continuing to feature one of our programs and one of our volunteers each month on the blog. We hope this helps you understand the background and focus of our various programs, as well as give you an opportunity to get to know the amazing volunteers who help make GiGi’s Playhouse Detroit possible! We are excited to feature one of our school age programs, Kids Club for 8-12 year olds.

Kids Club supports the development of social skills and language through peer to peer interaction in a casual and fun setting. This program will also support gross motor skills through active games, fine motor and self-help skills through meal/snack preparation and activities. Ms. Becca always brings so many fun games and activities to Kids Club! This program focuses on fun with friends with so many therapeudic benefits built right in to the games, activities and songs!

While right now we can’t physically meet together at the Playhouse, you can tune in to our virutal programs. When it is safe for us to meet again in person make sure you join us for Kids Club. This program is recommended for 8-12 year olds.

April Volunteer Spotlight: Rebecca Daugherty

Our May Volunteer Spotlight is Rebecca Daugherty, our Kids Club program leader! Ms. Becca jumped in at GiGi’s in January of 2019! She began helping out with our Open Play Program. In May of 2019, she became our Kids Club program leader. Ms. Becca is an LRC teacher at a local elementary school. Many of her Students love to attend Kids Club to see thier favorite teacher at GiGi’s! In her free time Becca enjoys reading, taking her dog for walks, grabbing coffee with her friends and hanging out at the Playhouse! We are so thankful for Becca’s continued love and support to our Playhouse!

Now do you want to jump in?

And as always, if you’d like to join us in changing the way the world views Down syndrome, we are always in need of volunteers!  Simply fill out the information here and we will get in touch with you!
