MCC Tigers to host Down syndrome awareness night on Jan. 25 against No. 5 Indian Hills

On Saturday, January 25, the Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team will help raise awareness for Down Syndrome as the Tigers host No. 5 Indian Hills Community College at 7:00 PM at the Student Activity Center.

Head coach Brynjar Brynjarrson and the Tigers will team up with Roger Brown, the owner of Iowa River Brewing Company to support GiGi’s Playhouse of Des Moines. GiGi’s Playhouse, a nationally known organization, supports families in developing high expectations for their children with Down Syndrome. The organziations aims to work on specific skill development in several areas including speech and language, social development, and fine and gross motor skills.

The Tigers will promote Down syndrome awareness at the game by donating 50 percent of all ticket sales to the cause. Tickets for the game will be $10 at the door. Children 12 and under will be free. Promotions will be held throughout the duration of the game as well, including a raffle for an autographed team basketball. Tickets for the raffle are $1 per entry. Local families that are blessed by Down syndrome are encouraged to come out to support the cause and enjoy the game. MCC Basketball photo

The money donated will be used locally to help bring more information and parent support literature to the Marshalltown OB/GYN, PC as well as the Obstetrics Department at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center. The funds also plan to be used to help develop a satellite program for those families interested in literacy and math tutoring for their children with Down syndrome.

GiGi’s Playhouse will be on hand at the game with many children from the organization. The children will have a photograph session with MCC players and cheerleaders prior to the start of the game. Children are also welcome to practice a short cheer to be performed at halftime with the cheerleaders!Following the game, children will have the opportunity to meet the players and have an autograph session. Kids will also have the chance to come onto the court for a post-game shoot around.
