Introducing: Family Resource Binder – Supporting Siblings of Individuals with Down Syndrome

Written by: UIC Occupational Therapy student Melissa Wen

We’re excited to share a new Family Resource Binder created by UIC occupational therapy student Melissa Wen as part of her capstone project at GiGi’s Playhouse Chicago! This resource was designed to celebrate and support siblings of individuals with Down syndrome as they navigate their evolving roles throughout life.

During her time at GiGi’s, Melissa led programs like Art ExplosionPlayhouse Pals, and GiGi’s Kitchen Adult, and had the opportunity to speak with many families and siblings. These conversations, and the insights shared, shaped the creation of this binder, which helps families explore the role of siblings from early childhood through adulthood.

The binder includes:

  • Practical tools and conversation starters for families

  • Family spotlights and real sibling stories

  • Ways siblings can be involved in their sibling’s life and GiGi’s programming

  • Resources organized by life stage—from baby to adult

If you get a chance to review the binder, we’d love to hear your thoughts! Your feedback helps us continue improving and expanding this resource.
