A Letter from Sunny – Occupational Therapy Intern
This past summer, I have had the pleasure of serving as an intern at GiGi’s Playhouse Chicago as a part of my occupational therapy doctoral capstone experience. Over the course of my experience here, I have been welcomed with open arms by the staff, board members and volunteers. As I finish up my time as the GiGi’s Playhouse Chicago OT Intern, I want to share a bit of what I’ve been up to.
Along with Jenny Popova (President), Grace Glenny (Site coordinator), and Maria Pradd (former President & Fundraising Chair), I developed a grant writing website and accompanying course. Grants are one of the primary means that non-profit organizations go about receiving funding to keep their facilities open and their programs running. Many feel the process of writing grants is too complex and time consuming, so they are reluctant to apply for much needed funding. This course aimed to make the process more accessible for non-profit organizations like GiGi’s.
The course consisted of self study using a website designed specifically for the course and two synchronous workshops. Participants were divided into small groups where they worked on developing their very own action plans for GiGi’s Playhouse Chicago. Feedback from participants was consistent in stating that teamwork and collaboration made the process of writing grants less daunting. I was very impressed to see what the participants were able to put together in such a brief period of time. Data indicates participants left the course feeling more knowledgeable and confident with the grant writing process. We already have seven grant matches identified and volunteers writing away! I am happy to see a renewed sense of excitement and energy around grant writing at the Playhouse, and I hope we can keep it up!
Additional tasks I have been up to include assisting with virtual programming such as Dance & Yoga, Cooking & Dance, and EPIC’s, Quincy’s Corner. Occupational therapy values adaptation and engagement in activities that provide meaning in our daily lives. During my brief time here at GiGi’s Playhouse Chicago, I have seen incredible work and flexibility among the staff as programming seamlessly adapted and transitioned from in person to a virtual format. Seeing the members remain engaged in their favorite activities, socializing with their peers and maintaining a sense of normalcy and routine during this time is so important and brings a huge smile to my face. Just like grant writing, making this transition as truly a team approach!
The last experience I want to highlight is my role as chair of the sponsorship committee for this year’s Dance-A-Thon. The amazing programming offered at GiGi’s Playhouse could not be possible without funding, and last year’s event was the biggest single fundraising event for the Chicago Playhouse. Collectively, the Chicago Playhouse raised $70,000, and this year’s committee is highly motivated to top that with this year’s virtual Dance-A-Thon event.
I am so thankful to the staff, board members and volunteers of GiGi’s Playhouse Chicago for making this an unforgettable time and an amazing learning experience! I am excited to continue applying for grants for the Playhouse and completing my duties as Sponsorship Chair. Thank you again to everyone for welcoming me so graciously, and I look forward to a future of continued partnership with such an amazing Playhouse!
