Congratulations to our Rush OTD Students!
As summer comes to a wrap, we are excited to congratulate Kate, Megan, and Hannah on their graduation from the Occupational Therapy Doctoral program at Rush University. Since their first week at the Playhouse, Kate, Megan, and Hannah have become indispensable members of the Chicago Playhouse team. From developing one-on-one and group lesson plans to their leadership on the Chicago Board of Managers and Programs Committees, their work has helped transform our Playhouse.
In addition to serving as a mentor for Quincy’s Corner, Kate helped bring back Art Explosion and worked with our program participants on making bookmarks and jewelry for sale at the Farmer’s Market. Kate also undertook a research project that explored how young people with Down syndrome build their self-determination (the process by which a person controls their own life) and form strong connections with their family, friends, and intimate partners.
Megan took the initiative to help us pilot a work readiness program. During this time, Megan worked with seven interns and ran a brand new group called ProjectTEAM! Through the internships and ProjectTEAM groups, Megan helped young adults explore work opportunities, build their confidence, work together, and (most importantly) have fun while striving for greatness. In her research, Megan explored how we can best support young adults with Down syndrome at work and as strong self-advocates.
Hannah reminded us that peace begins with us! She taught us that you are never too young or too old to start meditating and encouraged us to move outside of our comfort zone as we piloted a brand new yoga program! In addition to working with kids and families, Hannah trained two of our interns (Sam and Brenda) and helped them be the best yoga instructor they can be while completing their yoga certification. In her research, Hannah explored the benefits of mindfulness and yoga for parents, children, and interns!
Most importantly, Kate, Megan, and Hannah helped us reach for BEST OF ALL and taught us how to GOAL – PLAN – DO – CHECK and stay motivated no matter the challenge. Stay tuned for updates on their research findings!
While we are sad to see their capstone journey come to an end, we are excited to celebrate three new occupational therapists entering the profession! Thank you for all you do, Kate, Megan, and Hannah!!! Visit us often! We cannot wait to see all that you will accomplish!
