3 Questions with Volunteer Barb Luby

1) How are you connected to GiGi’s Playhouse?
In September 2012, I was contemplating retirement (in June 2013) from a long career teaching Special Education students.  I wasn’t sure what activities would fill my new found free time.  As fate would have it, I met Diane Husar at the first fundraiser for a future GiGi’s Playhouse in the south suburbs.  Immediately I knew I could be busy, fulfilled, and happy in retirement.  I volunteered at their next fundraiser and have never left!!!
2) What free programs do you volunteer for?
I was on the GiGi’s Board for six years, and coordinated the Literacy program for the first five years of its existence.  I was also a member of the moving/build out committee when we found our present location.  Currently, I lead the Leaps and Bounds program on the first Saturday of each month, and still tutor during each literacy session.  Occasionally, I consult and advocate with families about any academic issues or questions they might have with their child’s school district.
3) What is your favorite part about volunteering?
What I love the most about volunteering at the Playhouse is interacting with the families and staff.  We have such good people working and participating here.  The energy is always high, and the effort put forth by everyone is phenomenal!  It is a pleasure to spend time at GiGi’s Playhouse/Tinley Park!
