Happy National Volunteer Month!

Held in April every year, National Volunteer Month is a time to celebrate and recognize the contributions of volunteers. And here at GiGi’s Playhouse Tinley Park, we rely on our dedicated, talented and amazing volunteers to lead our programming as a 99% volunteer run organization! We are so grateful for every single person who has given us their time.

We asked a few of our volunteers, why do you volunteer at GiGi’s Playhouse Tinley Park? Here were their responses:

Elizabeth P., who has been volunteering as a Literacy and Math Tutor for 3 years says her favorite part of volunteering is “Making connections with students and their families. The reason I got involved in this, I’m a retired teacher and I missed education and working with students. I love having the opportunity to help students grow academically”

Lisa, a Playhouse parent who’s led our Friends, Fun and Fitness program for 3 years, volunteers because “I enjoy sharing my love of fitness and health with the participants and seeing how proud they are of themselves when they accomplish their goals”

Elizabeth K., who has been volunteering for 5 years as a Literacy tutor, co-leader for our Preschool Prep program, and our Playhouse photographer says her favorite part of volunteering is “being with everyone and seeing them at GiGi’s Playhouse. I’m enjoying my time here and looking forward to more fun times ahead!”

Char, a Playhouse grandma who’s been volunteering for 10 YEARS (ever since we opened our doors!) says, “Why do I volunteer? My grandson Matt was born with Down syndrome, so that’s how I first got connected to the Playhouse. Then it was the kids – they’re fun, they appreciate what you do for them, and this is cliché but their smiles; they light up the room”

If you’d like to join us and help make a difference in the lives of individuals with Down syndrome and their families, please consider volunteering! As you can see, it’s a truly rewarding experience and you would be helping us change the way the world views Down syndrome. We are especially in need of Literacy tutors to provide 1:1 tutoring one hour a week for our Summer session. No prior experience is required, we will provide the training!
