Team Work makes the Dream Work!
Looking Back to Move Forward: Our Summer of Change at the Playhouse
Last summer was a whirlwind at the Playhouse—a blur of boxes, laughter, teamwork, and a whole lot of sweat equity. In just two short months, we undertook the monumental task of relocating our entire Playhouse after nearly a decade in the same space. That meant inventorying, organizing, discarding, sorting, and packing nine years’ worth of resources, materials, and equipment. And somehow, we did it—all while continuing to run programs for our families up until the very last day in our original location.
What made this possible? The power of community.
This move wasn’t just about changing addresses. It was a true testament to the heart, resilience, and spirit of our Playhouse family. Volunteers, family members, participants, board members, and staff came together with incredible enthusiasm and commitment, many donating hours of their time—often in the summer heat—to help us begin the next chapter of our story.

The Work Behind the Scenes
Throughout June and July, volunteers arrived in shifts to tackle the mountain of work ahead. Each person brought a can-do attitude, no matter the task—shredding outdated paperwork (until the shredder gave up after 10 minutes!), taping and labeling boxes, and navigating the increasingly limited space as more and more items were packed and stacked. Laughter helped ease the chaos, and creative solutions were born on the fly.
Then came July—our “crunch time.” The final countdown was on, and we had to balance continuing our programs while also clearing out the space. The Playhouse grew more echoey by the day, which the younger kids found endlessly amusing. And still, programming didn’t stop—not for a single day.
Moving Day Mayhem—and Magic
Moving day came and went in a flash. With dozens of volunteers and families loading up their cars, we began transferring our belongings to a nearby storage unit. Day one went relatively smoothly—until we realized halfway through that one unit wouldn’t be enough. After four hours of cars cycling through like a conveyor belt, unloading box after box, we finally paused. It was clear: we’d need another day—and more space.

On day two, everyone showed up ready to work again, eager to complete the job. Spirits were high until the very first group entered the building and discovered the elevator had broken down. There was no sign it would be fixed anytime soon. But instead of giving up or waiting, our team did what they always do—they adapted. Volunteers rerouted vehicles to the back entrance, then carried everything up a full flight of stairs. In the middle of summer. In high humidity. Without complaint.

By 2 p.m., despite every challenge, every last box had been moved. It was exhausting, triumphant, and deeply inspiring.

A Bittersweet Goodbye—and a New Beginning
As we closed the doors on our original location, it was impossible not to feel a mix of emotions. That space had hosted nine years of purposeful programs, meaningful events, and countless connections. It held the laughter of toddlers, the triumph of academic milestones, and the warmth of community. It was home.
However, we now look ahead with excitement. In October, we signed a lease for a new, larger space—one that will allow us to grow, dream bigger, and serve more families. Although we haven’t had a completed home since the move, our programming has continued uninterrupted. We’ve continued offering tutoring, events, family engagement, and more, all thanks to the incredible dedication of our staff, volunteers, and families. Below are images of our vision for the new space.
