October: Down syndrome Awareness Month and What You Can Do To Celebrate

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!

No, not Christmas—though we love that too! It’s almost October, which means it’s time to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month! For families, advocates, and individuals with Down syndrome, October is a powerful opportunity to raise awareness, promote acceptance, and celebrate the incredible achievements of people in our community.

At GiGi’s Playhouse Wausau, we witness amazing progress every single day. Our participants are constantly reaching new milestones, building confidence, and showing the world what’s possible when we lead with kindness, generosity, and acceptance. That’s the heart of our Generation G promise: to be kind, to be generous, and to be accepting. And this October, we invite you to live out that promise with us.

Down Syndrome Awareness Month is about more than just education—it’s about celebration. It’s a time to highlight the talents, strengths, and contributions of individuals with Down syndrome. It’s also a chance to challenge outdated stereotypes and build a more inclusive world. Whether you’re a parent, a teacher, a business owner, or a community member, there are so many ways you can get involved and make a difference.

Here are some fun and meaningful ways to take part in Down Syndrome Awareness Month:

  1. Share Information: Social media is a powerful tool—let’s use it for good! Share facts, stories, and resources about Down syndrome to help educate your friends and followers. The more people know, the more understanding and acceptance we can build. Don’t forget to tag GiGi’s Playhouse Wausau and use hashtags like #DownSyndromeAwarenessMonth and #GenerationG!
  2. Volunteer: Looking for a way to connect and give back? We’re always looking for volunteers at GiGi’s Playhouse Wausau! Whether you help with programs, events, or behind-the-scenes support, your time and energy make a huge impact. Volunteering is also a great way to meet new people and be part of something truly meaningful. Sign up for our next Volunteer Orientation on October 16th.
  3. Attend Events: Mark your calendar for our upcoming “Let’s Kick Grass” Kickball Fundraiser on October 4th! It’s going to be a fun-filled day of community, laughter, and awareness.
And don’t miss our Family Halloween Dance and Dinner Party—a festive evening of costumes, music, and connection for all ages. These events are a great way to celebrate together and show your support for inclusion.

4. Wear Blue and Yellow: These are the official colors of Down syndrome awareness. Wearing blue and yellow throughout October is a simple but powerful way to show your support. Whether it’s a t-shirt, ribbon, or even a themed outfit for work or school—wear it proudly!
We’re also excited to be partnering once again with Greenleaf Designs to offer DSAM awareness shirts. These shirts are a stylish and meaningful way to show your support—keep an eye out for ordering details and wear yours with pride!

5. Decorate Your Space: If you own a business or work in a classroom, consider decorating your windows or bulletin boards with our DSAM window displays. It’s a great way to spark conversations and show your commitment to inclusion. Let us know if you are interested by emailing Erica at [email protected].

6. Include Everyone: Inclusion starts with intention. Whatever environment you’re in – school, work, sports, or social settings – make sure everyone feels welcomed and valued. Promote diversity, encourage participation, and celebrate differences.

7. Offer Support: Sometimes the best way to make a difference is simply to show up. Reach out to families in your community. Join us for Mom’s Talk, our monthly support group where moms connect, share, and support one another. It’s a beautiful space for encouragement and friendship.

8. Host a Lunch & Learn or Classroom Workshop: Invite GiGi’s Playhouse Wausau staff to your business or classroom for a Lunch and Learn or an interactive workshop on Down syndrome and the Generation G movement. These sessions are engaging, educational, and a great way to foster understanding and inclusion in your workplace or school.

Of course, this list is just the beginning. There are countless ways to celebrate and support individuals with Down syndrome. Whether you host a fundraiser, read a book about inclusion with your kids, or simply take time to learn something new—every action matters.

We at GiGi’s Playhouse Wausau are excited to celebrate with you. Let’s make this October the most inclusive, joyful, and impactful one yet. Together, we can build a world where everyone is accepted and embraced for who they are.

Happy Down Syndrome Awareness Month!
