Meet Joyce: Making a Difference with GiGi’s Virtual Playhouse

Joyce’s journey with GiGi’s Virtual Playhouse is powered by love, commitment, and a deep connection to the Down syndrome community. Her involvement began not online, but within her own family. Joyce is the proud mother of David, who is 42 years old and was born with Down syndrome. Through David, Joyce gained firsthand insight into the importance of inclusive, supportive programs that help individuals with Down syndrome grow in confidence, health, and independence.

While living in Fort Myers, Florida, Joyce discovered GiGi’s Playhouse and quickly became an active volunteer. She served as a GiGiFIT coach, where she found the experience both meaningful and rewarding. Coaching allowed Joyce to combine her passion for fitness with her desire to give back to a community that had already given so much to her family. Watching participants gain strength, confidence, and a sense of belonging reinforced her belief in the mission of GiGi’s Playhouse.

When Joyce later moved to Asheville, North Carolina, she was disappointed to learn that there was no local GiGi’s Playhouse nearby. Rather than stepping away from volunteering, Joyce looked for new ways to stay connected. That determination led her to GiGi’s Virtual Playhouse, where geography was no longer a barrier to making an impact. Through the virtual platform, Joyce was able to continue supporting individuals with Down syndrome while forming meaningful relationships from miles away.

Joyce now volunteers with GiGiFIT Adult, where she leads structured, engaging fitness sessions designed to improve strength, stability, and overall wellness. Each class includes intentional warm-ups, a rotating set of exercises to keep participants motivated, hydration breaks, and cool-down stretches. A strong emphasis is placed on hip strength, balance, and functional movement, all tailored to meet participants where they are. Beyond the physical benefits, Joyce focuses on building connections by offering consistent encouragement, celebrating progress, and fostering a welcoming environment. Many participants attend week after week, creating a familiar, supportive community that thrives on routine and relationships.

Since beginning her virtual volunteering in May 2025, Joyce has witnessed remarkable growth among the participants. She has seen individuals successfully perform exercises they once struggled with or could not complete at all. For Joyce, these moments represent true success—not just physical improvement, but perseverance, dedication, and self-belief. Watching participants push past their own expectations is what keeps her inspired and committed.

Outside of GiGi’s, Joyce leads a very active and engaged life. She enjoys gardening and serves on her HOA’s landscaping committee, hikes in the beautiful North Carolina outdoors, takes classes through UNC Asheville’s OLLI program, and practices Pilates six days a week. Her energy and enthusiasm extend into everything she does, including her volunteer work.

Joyce is also a passionate advocate for volunteering with GiGi’s Playhouse. She often encourages others to get involved, sharing that even committing to a single 12-week session can be incredibly fulfilling. The joy, gratitude, and connection she receives in return, she says, are truly meaningful and far exceed the time given.
