World Down Syndrome Day 2024 Celebration!
World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is recognized on 3/21, to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome. People all around the world come together to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day by wearing brightly colored, mismatched socks. Socks were chosen because the karyotype of Ds chromosomes actually looks like mismatched socks!
As a Down syndrome Achievement Center, at GiGi’s Playhouse Tinley Park we are always excited to honor WDSD! Our annual World Down Syndrome Day Carnival was held on 3/21/24, and we welcomed 170 attendees at St. Julie Billiart’s Devine Center for balloon animals, carnival games, prizes, pizza and popcorn.
A special thank you to St. Julie Billiart Church for gifting us this space, to Beggar’s Pizza Oak Forest, and a very kind group of students from Chicago Christian High School who volunteered to run our games.
Our WDSD Carnival is also an event where we get the opportunity to meet new families. We hope those families and anyone reading this can see and feel the love and support from our community, and continues to join us for free, fun and purposeful programming throughout the year! On 3/21 and every day, we are proud to celebrate Down syndrome awareness and achievement.
