Meet Maureen Schmitt, our amazing leader of the Amina Grace Speech and Language Program! Maureen is the clinical supervisor for two graduate students providing speech and language services for our participants. Therapy is provided in areas such as augmentative and alternative communication, fluency, improving receptive and expressive language skills, improving intelligibility, and promoting social skills. Many of the therapy sessions target very functional and social goals.
Tell us about you!
I am a speech-language pathologist. I was asked if I would like to supervise two graduate students completing therapy at GiGi’s Playhouse in Tinley Park. While I was familiar with GiGi’s, I had never had an opportunity to visit. When I did, I was amazed. The Playhouse was such a great space with a wonderful vibe, but even more important than the wonderful space, were the people that made the space. Karen Connelly gave me a tour and introduced me to several of the participants. She is amazing – full of energy, enthusiasm, genuine, and kind. Everyone was happy. It didn’t take me but a second to say that I definitely wanted to supervise students there.
What is your favorite part about volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse?
My favorite part has been meeting all the participants. The family members and the participants all seem glad to be at the Playhouse. There is a real sense of community between families. There are so many opportunities for young adults to have a variety of activities to take part in. Conversely, it has been great to watch the families come in for Open Play and then watch the older participants interact with the young participants.
Do you have a favorite or memorable moment from volunteering at GiGi’s?
One of my favorite moments was when one of the participants asked if during the session, she and her graduate student could make a “pink drink,” like they make at Starbucks. The participant needed to list the ingredients and then talk about the sequence of how the drink was made. Then she and her student clinician made the drink. She was also required to ask all parents/grandparents/staff at the Playhouse if they would like a drink. She poured and passed out the drinks to everyone. She was so happy making the drink, drinking the drink, and sharing the drink.
How has volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse impacted you personally?
Personally, I enjoy and am very proud of being a small part of the GiGi’s Playhouse family in Tinley Park.
Thank you, Maureen, for everything you do! You are an important part of helping participants achieve their Best of All, and we appreciate you!!
