Summer Speech Is In Session!
Meet Vicki Morris, our leader for the The Amina Grace Speech and Language Program this summer! Vicki is the clinical supervisor for two graduate students providing speech and language services for our participants. Therapy is provided in areas such as augmentative and alternative communication, fluency, improving receptive and expressive language skills, improving intelligibility, and promoting social skills. Many of the therapy sessions target very functional and social goals. |

Tell us about you!
My name is Vicki Morris. I have been coming to GiGi’s in the summers for three years to supervise graduate student speech clinicians from Governors State University. This summer I am thrilled to be working with Shaniya and Lindsey. It is the first practicum for both of them.
What’s your favorite part about volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse?
Everyone who walks through the doors of GiGi’s is warm and welcoming. There is a true sense of community and belonging.
What do you enjoy most about your role at GiGi’s Playhouse?
As I shared earlier, I am one of the supervising speech-language pathologist for the students enrolled in Governors State University. I have seen some familiar faces over the years, and meet new friends every summer. I enjoy learning their stories and hope we can play a small part in helping clients communicate more effectively.
Do you have a favorite or memorable moment from volunteering at GiGi’s?
I usually start about the time the Donut Run fundraiser is happening. It is so great to see all the hard work come to fruition and allow for continued programming.
How has volunteering at GiGi’s Playhouse impacted you personally?
Meeting new clients and observing the interactions with the student clinicians has been heartwarming. Often, the student clinicians have come in and been very nervous. The clients they serve are so patient and kind and the natural hesitancies melt away. It is truly a beautiful thing to see and has taught me to also be more patient and offering of grace.
Thank you, Vicki, for everything you do! You are an important part of helping participants achieve their Best of All, and we appreciate you!! |
