Down syndrome is not wonderful…..wait are we allowed to say that? | Down syndrome Achievement Center, Syracuse NY
We read a quote this week on Instagram that stuck. We are a place where celebration is east to come by. Little ones taking first steps, young adults getting first jobs, or going on collage interviews etc. We LOVE to celebrate your hard work, determination and success!
With that said we also are really great place to come when life is hard or scary. We have a community of moms and dads who “get it”, moms, dads, siblings and friends who have been there done that. We are all here for you. If/when you find yourself in a spot where you need advice or just a “you can do this it will be ok” we are here, reach out. It is ok to say Down syndrome is not wonderful BUT my kid (my life) is amazing and I am so glad we get to be in it.
“I’ve been guilty of painting rainbows over Down syndrome in the past- it’s easy to misspeak how wonderful Fiona is and make it seem like Down syndrome is wonderful. Down syndrome it self is not wonderful. It is not wonderful to have a lower then average IQ, it’s not wonderful to have it harder in life, it’s not wonderful to have life threatening medical conditions and other unpleasant things the extra chromosome can cause. But the people with Down syndrome are wonderful. It’s wonderful to see life through innocent eyes. It’s wonderful to witness someone overcome hardship. It’s wonderful to get to know a person for who they are, to experience different things, to find beauty in unexpected places and to live with a thankful heart. When I look at this little girl I am overcome with gratitude that I get to be her mother.” Shannon Blaeske (find her here on IG )
