Theatre Mania

When you think of skills beneficial for individuals with Down syndrome to practice, many things come to mind, but some stick out more than others. Gross motor skills, speech skills, reading, and creative expression, to name a few. All of those skills happen to be components of our Portal Performing Arts program! Our amazing Portal volunteers put on a week-long Theatre Mania program this August and our amazingly talented participants had a blast. While Portal’s week-long Theatre Mania class provided critical practice on skills that extend far past the stage, the strictly theatre aspects were just as significant. It allowed our participants to build their confidence, shine in the spotlight, and push themselves out of their comfort zones. Theatre Mania entailed some excellent dance numbers, catchy songs to sing, and a few scenes, all from Mary Poppins. Our students loved to reimagine this classic and make it their own.

Although Theatre Mania was only a week-long, our friends from Portal are at the Playhouse year-round. Portal provides two weekly programs that include all the fantastic skills in theatre that come in handy in and outside the spotlight.
